3 Ways to Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

If your Satellite Beach, Florida, home’s indoor air quality is low, it could contain pet dander, pollen, dust, biological growth, or dirt. These substances often lead to headaches, asthma or allergy symptoms, eye irritation, rashes, fatigue, and other health problems. Poor indoor air quality can also reduce your heater and air conditioner’s airflow, raising your utility bills and making some rooms less comfortable. To increase your indoor air quality, change your air filter often, maintain your HVAC system, and avoid volatile organic compounds.

Change your air filter regularly

For excellent indoor air quality, you should replace your system’s air filter once per month. Air filters only take a few minutes to change. A dirty or clogged filter could reduce your HVAC system’s efficiency and spread bad smells, dust, and other contaminants around your home. A dirty air filter could even shorten your system’s life by increasing wear.

Maintain your HVAC system

You should get your HVAC system checked by a professional at least once per year. That way, you can find problems such as leaks in your ductwork and get them repaired before they impact your indoor air quality or your comfort. Regular maintenance will also help you prevent inconvenient, costly breakdowns.

Avoid volatile organic compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) evaporate near room temperature, and they include xylene, benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, and acetone. Many commercial glues, paints, cleaners, and air fresheners contain VOCs. These substances can lead to dizziness, fatigue, headaches, and other issues. You can keep them out of your home by using natural products when possible. Lemon juice with olive oil makes an excellent furniture polish, and water and baking soda will make cleaning many different surfaces easy.
